Lunit, a medical AI company, said on the 31st that Lunit INSIGHT CXR, one of its flagship products, is being widely used to analyze COVID-19 X-rays in South Korea and abroad. The software assists in detecting major lung abnormalities.

Approved by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and awarded the European CE mark, Lunit INSIGHT CXR helps analyze COVID-19 X-rays. COVID-19 can cause pneumonia, and the AI algorithm analyzes chest X-rays in seconds, detecting major lung abnormalities, including pneumonia, with 97%–99% accuracy and assisting physicians with their readings. As of March 2020, Lunit INSIGHT CXR had analyzed more than 3 million chest X-rays in 80 countries.

Lunit’s product helps medical staff screen more patients efficiently amid a global shortage of radiologists. In South Korea, it is being used at the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Center for Living and Treatment No. 3, located at Seoul National University Hospital’s Human Resources Development Center.

Overseas, the product is being used in Brazil, where confirmed cases are rising rapidly. Prevent Senior is one of Brazil’s largest hospital chains, with more than eight hospitals in the São Paulo area. As of the end of March, the hospital had analyzed chest X-rays from more than 3,000 people suspected of having COVID-19 using Lunit INSIGHT CXR.

“We hope our decision to make AI software for analyzing COVID-19 X-rays available for free will help ease the burden on healthcare systems around the world,” said Lunit CEO Seo Beom-seok.
