CareMind, which operates Afoter, a platform that helps patients manage their recovery after plastic surgery, announced on the 8th that it had secured follow-on investment from KAIST Young Entrepreneurship Investment Holdings, Magellan Technology Investment, and Lotte Accelerator.
Afoter helps patients manage their recovery after plastic surgery. Based on photos of the surgical site, condition updates, and symptoms entered by patients, it tells them whether they are recovering well and how long it may be before they can return to their daily routines. Patients can also share their progress records with the surgeon who performed their procedure and receive quality answers. In addition, Afoter runs a community for post-surgery patients to exchange information and provides original educational content to support a faster, healthier recovery.
Afoter helps patients manage concerns and frustration about complications and returning to daily life after plastic surgery. Within a year of launch, it rose to third place in the plastic surgery app market. Hospitals registered by patients who underwent surgery numbered 924, and 1,474 doctors were registered, representing 95% of all plastic surgeons. Half of the service’s users had undergone eye surgery, showing that patients used Afoter to manage their recovery even after relatively minor procedures. Patients also logged their progress on the service every day for an average of more than 60 days, and more than 60,000 progress photos have been collected on the platform. Afoter has also gained traction by giving users access to firsthand accounts from actual surgery patients, and is growing rapidly in an advertising-driven plastic surgery market.
Magellan Technology Investment Director Seo Byung-hee, whose firm participated in the investment, explained the decision: “Afoter is a healthcare platform that can provide personalized analysis based on individual post-surgery recovery data. It has the potential to expand into a platform that uses AI to track recovery and collect data for telemedicine, making it ideally suited to a changing medical environment increasingly defined by personalized care and telemedicine.”
Afoter CEO Shin Yoon-je said, “With this investment, we plan to provide a more advanced recovery management system by leveraging patient health data and AI technology.”
Afoter launched its service in February 2019 and, in recognition of its business performance and growth potential, previously secured seed funding from Mashup Angels and Neoply, which specialize in investing in early-stage startups.
