XL8, a startup specializing in AI-powered media translation, announced on the 20th that it has raised an investment from FuturePlay.

Founded in Silicon Valley in October 2019, XL8 expanded its operations by establishing a Korean subsidiary in November 2021.

With AI translation technology, XL8 is helping media companies expand globally through a new AI machine translation ecosystem tailored to media.

AI machine translation enables XL8 to translate content faster than human translators, helping customers deliver content more quickly. XL8’s media-focused AI currently translates 10 million characters per day. Combined with quality control by professional translators, including additional translation, its fast and accurate service helps customers export content worldwide quickly.

Through a strong partnership with IYUNO-SDI, which provides high-quality translation, subtitles, and dubbing for global OTT platforms such as Netflix, Disney, and HBO, XL8 offers AI translation services that are faster, more accurate, and more cost-effective.

Korean dramas and variety shows are currently popular worldwide, and audiences in the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia want to watch them with subtitles as soon as possible. In response, XL8 plans to expand its business to provide translation services and platforms for media content across a range of fields, including dramas, variety shows, and gaming broadcasts.

XL8 CEO Jung Young-hoon said, “We established XL8 in November 2021 to completely remove language barriers from the media industry ecosystem.” He added, “With this investment, we plan to step up efforts to help Korean Wave stars communicate with overseas fans in real time online, without language barriers, using XL8’s cloud solutions.”

XL8 was selected in April 2022 for support under the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ TIPS program.
