New Paradigm Investment announced on the 10th that it had made a seed investment in Vaxdigm, a biotech startup developing vaccines.

Founded in December 2021, Vaxdigm has proprietary technology designed to rapidly develop improved vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, and vaccines for emerging infectious diseases.

Vaxdigm CEO Kim Sung-jae has worked in clinical development at multinational companies including global pharmaceutical giant Merck, Japan’s Takeda Pharmaceutical and Pfizer. He has also handled clinical development and venture investment reviews at Swiss pharmaceutical company Ferring, as well as marketing and sales at GenCurix. A biotech expert, he has built diverse experience across all the fields needed to run a biotech company.

“We expect Vaxdigm to transform the vaccine development paradigm and lead a new era in the field,” said Park Je-hyun, CEO of New Paradigm Investment. “We invested because we believe the company can help secure vaccine sovereignty and create high-value exports by developing and producing vaccines domestically—not only for COVID-19 but also to respond to the rapid spread of new viruses between species driven by climate change.”

Vaxdigm is focused on rapidly and cost-effectively developing and producing recombinant protein vaccines using its proprietary technology for fast protein production in microorganisms, rather than the insect cells used by Novavax.

“We are developing proprietary technology that can enhance the protective immunogenicity of target proteins, and plan to use it to rapidly develop a range of antigen vaccines with lower costs and improved efficacy, safety and stability,” Vaxdigm said.

“With this investment, we will establish ourselves at New Paradigm’s base camp, pursue the TIPS program and quickly grow into a Baby Unicorn,” said Vaxdigm CEO Kim Sung-jae. “Our core technology for manufacturing antigen vaccines can be applied not only to COVID-19 vaccines but also to vaccines currently in use, such as those for Japanese encephalitis and hepatitis A, as well as vaccines for future pandemics that could threaten humanity. We will drive revenue growth through rapid technology transfers.”

Kim added, “We have proprietary technology that will allow us to develop antigen vaccines faster than other countries in preparation for future emerging infectious diseases similar to swine flu, Ebola, MERS, SARS and COVID-19. We plan to build a diverse product pipeline.”
