Tech Seoul Inc. announced on the 26th that it had hosted the NYC Korean Startup Showcase in New York City with New York-based Starta VC.
Held from the 18th to the 22nd (Eastern Time), the showcase was organized to help three tech startups selected through an audition expand into the U.S. It was linked to Ulsan Center for Creative Economy & Innovation’s U-Star Global program, a flagship accelerator that supports global expansion and fundraising.
The participating startups were △POSCORE, which develops magnetic powder materials for eco-friendly automotive, electrical and electronic components using steel scrap; △CEBB Science, which develops graphene-silicon anode materials for next-generation rechargeable batteries; and △Endocura, which develops locally administered cancer treatments.
In New York, Tech Seoul also held a series of events: △an immigration law seminar led by a prominent local attorney and a CPA seminar on setting up a U.S. corporation (the 18th); △a visit to Fast Company’s Innovation Festival, a tech innovation event that New Yorkers consider a must-see (the 19th); △a workshop run by Starta’s accelerator program to prepare for New York pitches (the 20th); △a pitch contest and networking event attended by prominent New York venture capitalists, individual investors and angel groups (the 21st); △a tour of New York’s startup ecosystem, including meetings with local startups to hear their success stories and visits to coworking spaces for companies entering the market (the 22nd); and △follow-up investment consultations with Starta VC and networking with local startups after the pitches (the 22nd).
Soo-jin Heo, a team leader at Ulsan Center for Creative Economy & Innovation, said, “This program helped tech entrepreneurs supported by the center expand into global markets. We will continue to prepare a range of programs to support companies’ global expansion.”
Starta VC partner Anastasia Lykova said, “We’re delighted to continue working with the startups after successfully completing the Korean Immersion Program! Their potential is very exciting, and I think it’s something many U.S. investors haven’t yet had a chance to discover.” She added, “We’re glad to introduce them to this opportunity and plan to continue working together so more U.S. investors can learn about innovative Korean companies.”
Tech Seoul CEO Thomas Park said, “We’re proud that the NYC Korean Startup Showcase, a program planned by Tech Seoul and organized with leading New York VC Starta VC, is one of the most effective and rewarding programs for Korean startups visiting New York.”
Park added, “Tech Seoul plans to invite around 300 Korean startups to New York and support their global expansion so they can become leading Korean Wave startups in the city.”
