Samsung Electronics won 45 awards at the prestigious international design competition IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards) 2024: two Gold, one Silver, two Bronze and 40 finalist awards.
This year, the company was recognized for a wide range of designs that enhance customers’ lifestyles, including interaction design, sustainable design with social value and advanced concept design, as well as product design.
Organized by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) since 1980, IDEA evaluates design innovation, user experience and social impact. This year’s awards recognized entries in 20 categories, including industrial products, consumer technology, digital interaction and packaging.
Galaxy AI UX and advanced concept design for home appliance accessories win Gold
At IDEA 2024, Galaxy AI UX and Sustainable Design Identity for Home Appliances Accessories won the competition’s top honor, Gold.
Powered by Galaxy AI, Galaxy AI UX provides real-time interpretation for calls and messages, helping people communicate freely across language barriers.
Live Translate, which supports 16 languages, and Chat Assist, which translates messages and adjusts their tone, enable more efficient communication.
Note Assist, which condenses and simplifies complex text in Samsung Notes, and Browsing Assist, which translates and summarizes web pages in the user’s preferred language, help maximize productivity at work and school.
Samsung introduced Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 series, unveiled in January, and plans to make it available on a total of 200 million Galaxy devices by the end of the year.
Sustainable Design Identity for Home Appliances Accessories encourages users to manage and dispose of consumables appropriately through color-coded designs.
Filters in appliances such as air purifiers and vacuum cleaners need to be replaced every few months. To help consumers manage waste efficiently, the filters use different colors based on how they should be handled: gray for reusable items, green for recycling and brown for general waste.
Galaxy Z Flip5 wins Silver; Galaxy Tab S9 series and AI Vision Inside win Bronze
The Galaxy Z Flip5, which won Silver, enhances the cover-screen experience. Its new Flex Hinge drew recognition for its balanced design, which is both aesthetically pleasing and disperses external impact.
Bronze went to the Galaxy Tab S9 series, which enhances the tablet experience with outstanding durability and features tailored to outdoor use, and AI Vision Inside, which uses the internal camera in the Bespoke AI Family Hub to recognize food items taken in and out of the refrigerator and automatically update the food list.
“We will continue to introduce designs that connect with customers,” says Roh Tae-moon, head of Samsung’s Design Management Center
Samsung Electronics was named a finalist in 40 categories spanning distinctive experiences that highlight product strengths, sustainability-focused designs and advanced concepts.
Selected products included the Bespoke AI Combo, an all-in-one washer and dryer that handles laundry from washing to drying in a single appliance; the Neo QLED 8K (QN900D), featuring an Infinite Air Design that makes the screen appear to float and enhances immersion; and Music Frame, a frame-style speaker designed to complement a variety of living spaces.
Other selections included Easy Setting Box, which adds screen-splitting functionality and lets users move seamlessly between a PC and Smart Monitor with a single mouse, without a remote; and the packaging for the Galaxy Z Flip5 Maison Margiela Edition, created through Samsung’s second collaboration with Paris haute couture house Maison Margiela.
Roh Tae-moon, president and head of Samsung Electronics’ Design Management Center, said, “We will enrich customers’ lives through designs that stay true to the essential value of our products while incorporating innovative technologies such as AI and delivering social value. We will continue to introduce designs that connect with customers.”
